Day 20: Letting Go

"Let go and let God..." We hear that quite a lot and it is true of what we should do. But we often make letting go sound like such an easy process, at least I find myself making it sound easy when it actually isn't... at all. I've never been the super controlling type but when it comes to certain areas of my heart and life I struggle to loosen my grip, as I think a lot of us can say about at least one area in our lives. One particular area that I've really been struggling to surrender to God is with my heart in regards to romance and marriage. It's an area that I've been deeply wounded in and therefore, my defenses in this part of my heart automatically go up, fear being the barb-wired fence and insecurity the screaming alarms trying to keep others out. But that was never the way love was intended to be...

Letting go is hard. We are all control freaks to some degree. We often have an idea of how we would like our life to go or what we desire in life and when things start happening that make those ideas and plans start to crumble, we often make a bigger mess with our scrambling to "fix" things ourselves. We were given free-will but we were never made to try and figure out everything on our own.

Prying our fearful fingers off of the things we desire doesn't mean giving up. When we truly let go (yes, even of the most important things in our lives) and give it to God, we are telling Him, "I trust You. I believe You for who You are. I believe You are sovereign and good, faithful to the end. You always keep Your promises. Even when I don't understand, I know Your plans are good." It's easy to tell God that, but to genuinely believe that and react with the action of letting go of our most valuable areas of our lives... that takes faith. That takes bold faith.

It can be extremely hard at first, and honestly, sometimes even way after the beginning stages, but having the faith to let things go and lay them at the Creator's feet not only makes us stronger and takes the load off of us, but it also draws us closer in trust and intimacy with the Lord. While it may not be easy at times, it's always worth it. Let God do what only He can do and while He is working, rest in the peace and comfort that comes at the end of truly letting go.

“Be still, and know that I am God..." Psalm 46:10

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
