Day 16: King Over Seasons
Seasons. A common theme we talk about in the Christian life. "I'm going through a season of healing... I'm in a season of blessing... I'm in a season of the dryland..." I find myself talking about seasons a lot myself. I also find myself missing certain seasons, seasons that I "felt" closer to God, or seasons that were more joyful, even sometimes missing the painful ones. Today as I was praying to the Lord I felt Him revealing to my soul that we, I, have become obsessed with seasons. Should we be excited about what the Lord is doing in every specific phase of our lives? Yes, of course. But should it be the end-all-say-all? Should it be what determines our behavior and attitude and mindset and heart-set? Absolutely not.
We seem to have forgotten that the seasons don't determine our everything. That's why they are called seasons, just as the weather changes, so do our circumstances and situations and feelings. We seem to have forgotten that seasons are meant to help shape and mold us, not define us-- only our Creator can do that. And until we find satisfaction completely in our Savior, we will always be complaining about whatever season we are in.
Whatever you are going through today-- a wasteland or an abundant garden-- whatever season you are in, getting out of, going into, whatever emotion, feeling, circumstance, situation, doubt, fear, excitement, longing you may have, know that it was never meant to take up all your heart and mind and energy, it was always, as everything in this life, was meant to draw you closer to your Redeemer. So let's pray today...
God, convict our hearts and turn us back to You, no matter the circumstances. Let us not worship the seasons, Father, but instead the Sovereign King over the seasons-- You, Lord. You are so much bigger, so much greater than all the highs and the lows. You are the steadfast, constant Lover who stays when seasons come and seasons go. You are good. You are faithful, God. You are constant, always the same. Remind us that You are the King over all our seasons.
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." Malachi 3:6
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8
"Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’" Isaiah 46:9-10
