Tonight I had the opportunity to help lead and be apart of a night of worship at my church. As we were running through a few songs before the night began, I couldn't help but starring outside the 3 large windows that flood light into the sanctuary. I love these windows... they bring in such gorgeous natural light, light that feels warm and so real and effortless. As I looked outside tonight I saw the sun beginning to go down. I saw through the thick of the woods an orangish red beaming through the brush and branches. The light was still there... even when the sun went down and the night took over, there was and is still light, if we just look for it.
Light changes things. It makes plants grow, it gives energy to our winter-worn bodies, it gives us a way to see what we are doing, and it leads the way in and out of places. Isn't it funny though, how we can be so overwhelmed by the fear of the dark when light is so much stronger? When we face the dark times in life we often find ourselves in fear of being stuck there. There are parts of ourselves that no one else knows except our Creator, dark areas that we often hide from even those we love the most... but here's the truth: God sees that area, that place in you that desperately needs His healing, resurrecting power and He wants to do in you what only He can do. There is no place too dark, no sin too brutal, no cut too deep that the Light of life cannot touch and heal you.
The enemy tries to make us feel isolated, like no one could have ever done what we have done or felt what we have felt... like "yes, there's grace and there's healing for blank, blank, and blank, but most certainly not for what I've done, what's been done to me, or what I've been through..." The enemy wants you in utter darkness so that you cannot see those around you who are/have gone through exactly what you are going through, so you don't see that you're not alone, to make you fear the next step since you cannot see right in front of you. There is no place you can go that the love, grace, peace, healing, restoration of God cannot go. It's impossible. Darkness is not able to block out, to terminate the presence and power of God. Wherever you go, no matter how dark, there is a light that is greater and stronger still.
This year God has been showing me that He wants to heal those deep parts of me that are ugly, raw, and left unspoken. Those areas from past events and heartbreak, confusion, terror, and nightmares that have come true. Those places inside that we say we've "dealt with" but deep down we know we haven't truly gotten to the root of it because of the flare-ups of rage and pain we express. God said, "Yeah, that spot, that area, and that one too. I see it. I always have... and I want you to release it completely to me. Lay it down, child." And He wants to do the same in you, your heart and soul today.
Whatever you may be going through today, in this season, or dealing with from years of built up sorrow, whatever darkness may have taken hold of in certain areas of your life, know that is is not and never will be too much for the Healer to mend. This is where your healing begins: in laying it at His feet. This is where you are restored, this is where the bad memories, the mourning is turned into dancing and freedom. This is where the Light comes in... this is where the Light touches.
"Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."
